Offline Memo Apps
Compare five apps for writing without a connection, reopening saved notes, and syncing after reconnection. Check each step before relying on it while travelling.
Writing offline, syncing to another device, and delivering an email are separate steps. Consider Apple Notes for local iPhone notes, or Obsidian and Simplenote for Android and desktop use. Download what you need before leaving, then test that you can reopen it without a connection.

Choose among five offline-capable apps
Choose by destination: Apple Notes for text and photos on iPhone; Obsidian or Simplenote for Android and desktop; Bear for Markdown on Apple devices; or Simple Memo for a later email to yourself. This is a workflow comparison, not a speed ranking.
Apple Notes: text and photos on iPhone
For keeping text and photos on an iPhone, the built-in app is a starting point. For local notes, enable On My iPhone in Settings → Apps → Notes, then choose a folder in that account in Notes. Labels can vary with the OS version.
This account is separate from your iCloud notes. For another device, check iCloud sync and make sure the notes you need already open on this phone. See Apple’s account guide.
Obsidian: Markdown in a local vault
For Markdown across iPhone, Android, and desktop, write in a local vault and configure sync separately. Open needed attachments before leaving too. See how to locate and open a vault.
Official Obsidian Sync is a paid service connecting local and remote vaults. Changes sync after reconnection. The remote data is stored on Obsidian’s servers, so this is not cloud-free peer-to-peer sync.
Bear: Markdown on Apple devices
For writing with text and images on Mac, iPhone, and iPad, Bear includes local note access in its free tier. iCloud sync across devices requires Bear Pro.
Open needed notes and attachments before going offline. After reconnecting, check sync status in settings. A large initial sync can take time; see Bear’s sync troubleshooting.
Simplenote: text across devices
A free option for text notes across iPhone, Android, and desktop. Sign in online and download your notes before editing offline in the apps. Changes reach other devices after reconnection.
You cannot first open the ordinary web app while already offline. For travel, test a configured native app in advance. See Simplenote’s offline requirements.
Simple Memo: capture now, send to your inbox later
Capture short text on iPhone for a configured email address. Verify that address and receive a small test message before leaving. See first setup and delivery checks.
Pending sends wait in the on-device Outbox. After reconnecting, open the app, check pending or failed items, and confirm the destination inbox. The free tier allows 3 sends per day. Saving to Obsidian also requires setting up the integration and target on iPhone.
The Outbox and history use on-device encryption; email goes through delivery infrastructure. This is not end-to-end encrypted email. See the privacy explanation.
Test a small note before going offline
- Prepare online: finish setup, sign-in, or recipient verification, and open needed notes and attachments.
- Disconnect: turn on airplane mode and check Wi-Fi is also off. Type a short test note. If you rely on dictation or image recognition, test those features separately.
- Check storage: inspect the note list. In Simple Memo, press Send and confirm the item is waiting in the Outbox; typing a draft alone does not queue a send. Move to another screen, then return to confirm the text is still present.
- Reconnect: open the app and confirm the same text on the other device or in the destination inbox.
A local-only account does not sync to another device. Test the complete workflow instead of relying on a signal icon.

If reconnecting does not complete sync or delivery
Preserve the text before deleting data, signing out, or reinstalling. Check the destination account, paused sync, available storage, and displayed errors. With Simple Memo, distinguish the Outbox status from arrival in the inbox.
If two devices edit the same note while offline, conflict handling depends on the app and sync service. Copy both versions before merging anything you need to keep. Do not assume every service preserves every edit. Sync can also propagate deletion, so keep a separate backup for important notes.

Can I use memo apps without internet?
Offline-capable apps can use local notes after required setup and downloads. Syncing to another device or delivering an email requires a connection.
Do memo apps work on airplanes?
A compatible app can work if the notes you need are downloaded. Before flying, test saving and reopening with airplane mode on and Wi-Fi off. Test extra features such as dictation separately.
What happens when offline memos conflict during sync?
It depends on the app and sync service. Copy both versions you need before merging, then check the result. Preserving every change is not a universal guarantee.
Is Obsidian Sync cloud-free peer-to-peer sync?
No. Official Obsidian Sync connects local vaults with a remote vault on Obsidian’s servers. You can edit offline and sync after reconnecting.
Does a Simple Memo captured offline reach my email?
Email cannot be delivered while offline. Pending sends wait in the Outbox. After reconnecting, check the app’s status and confirm that the same text has arrived in your inbox.
