Obsidian Sync: do you need Standard or Plus?

Obsidian Sync is a paid add-on starting at $4/user/month (billed annually) and comes in two plans: Standard and Plus. Using Obsidian's Sync page and help (checked September 26, 2026), this page lays out how they differ — price, storage, vault count, file size and version history — and a decision guide for which one you need.

SHORT ANSWER

Standard ($4/user/month billed annually, $5 monthly) syncs 1 vault with 1 GB of storage, files up to 5 MB and 1 month of note history. Plus ($8/user/month billed annually, $10 monthly) syncs up to 10 vaults with 10 GB (expandable to 100 GB), files up to 200 MB and 12 months of note history. Attachments keep older versions for 2 weeks on both, and sync, end-to-end encryption and shared vaults work on both. If one vault under 1 GB with no large files and a month of history is enough, Standard covers it; otherwise, get Plus.

The help page "Plans and storage limits" lists each plan's vault count, storage and file-size limit, and the "Version history" help lists how long older versions are kept (all checked September 26, 2026; see also our pricing article).

Which one should you pick?

Choose by vault count and storage first, then by how long you need history. Answer the questions below.

  • Do you sync more than one vault, need more than 1 GB in total, or keep files larger than 5 MB (PDFs, audio, video)?

  • Could it take you more than a month to notice a note was overwritten or deleted by mistake?

  • Do you keep important records — meeting notes, research logs — that you only revisit every few months to a year?

※ Sync, end-to-end encryption and shared vaults work on either plan. In a shared vault, the file-size limit follows each plan (5 MB on Standard, 200 MB on Plus).

Sync pricing and input-app access are separate

Standard vs. Plus is a choice about vault count, storage, file limits and history. Neither subscription automatically gives Simple Memo access to a vault. To save from Simple Memo, enable the integration, select a destination folder accessible through the Files app and a daily note or fixed Inbox, then check the write test that does not send email. Confirm email delivery and note storage separately. The write test checks writing to the selected destination on this device, not arrival on another device. The official FAQ says Obsidian Sync syncs files while Obsidian is running. Open Obsidian on each device using Sync and check the note content on the other device separately.

Obsidian does not recommend combining Obsidian Sync with another sync service for the same vault. If your vault is already synced through iCloud Drive or a similar service, read the official setup guide and third-party sync FAQ first. Do not add another sync service just to use an input app. If you cannot select the destination or the write test fails, do not assume direct saving works; consider email or another route separately.

Who does Standard work for?
Anyone syncing one vault that stays under 1 GB, with no files over 5 MB, who would notice an accidental overwrite or deletion within about a month. Check your vault folder's size before choosing.
Who needs Plus?
Anyone who syncs more than one vault, needs more than 1 GB, keeps files larger than 5 MB (PDFs, audio, video), or keeps important records — meeting notes, research logs, contract drafts — that they only revisit every few months to a year. The 12-month history matters if you might not notice a bad edit until more than a month has passed.
Can I get something like version history for free?
Yes. Managing your vault as a Git repository gives you unlimited change history per commit, for free. Resolving a conflict does require knowing Git, though — see the hands-on Git section on /obsidian/sync/ for what that looks like in practice.
