Using Simple Memo
with Proton Mail

Have the app on your iPhone and keep Proton Mail available in its app or on the web during setup. Use a short note without personal information for the first delivery check.

1. Get the appOpen the App Store using this direct link. Check the current iOS requirement and availability in the listing.
2. Check your active Proton addressCopy an address shown in your Proton Mail settings that you can receive mail at. Do not simply replace @proton.me with @protonmail.com; use an address enabled for your account.
3. Register it as your Simple Memo destinationEnter the recipient address in the app settings and request a verification code. Check spelling and stray spaces.
4. Finish verification using the emailed codeOpen the message in Proton Mail, then return to the app to enter the code. If it is missing, follow the checks below. For a resend, follow the wait shown in the app and check the latest message.
5. Send a short note and read it in Proton MailWrite and send a note, then confirm its content in your inbox. App-side acceptance and inbox arrival are separate checks. To keep a copy in Obsidian, also configure the vault and destination note.

1. Match the destination to the account you are viewing.Check the address saved in Simple Memo and the currently open Proton account. Rule out a typo or an inactive alias.
2. Check Inbox, Spam, and Trash separately.Look around the send time or by subject. All Mail excludes Spam and Trash by default, so that view alone can miss a message. See Proton’s folder explanation.
3. Inspect custom folders, filters, and blocked senders.A rule may have moved the message out of Inbox. Check whether the actual sender is blocked.
4. Check storage and ordinary mail delivery.Confirm available capacity and whether other normal email arrives. Proton Mail displays current storage usage; see how to check capacity.
5. Resend only when needed.For verification codes, follow the wait displayed in the app. Before resending a note, compare history with received mail to avoid duplicate copies.

If the issue persists, record the send time and time zone, the error shown in the app, and the checks already completed. You do not need to share a verification code or password.

If a verification message or note appears in Spam, first confirm that it corresponds to your own action and inspect its sender email address. Use the address from the actual message, rather than relying on a display name or guessing the sender.

1. On Proton Mail’s web app, open Settings → All settings → Filters.
2. In the spam, block, and allow lists, add the verified sender address to the allow list. Inspect any existing block entry too.
3. Send one short note and confirm it arrives in Inbox or your chosen folder.

On mobile, look for Spam and filters within Settings. Labels and placement may change; consult Proton’s current steps.

You do not need Bridge just to receive ordinary Simple Memo email in Proton Mail.Bridge lets desktop clients such as Outlook, Apple Mail, and Thunderbird work with Proton Mail. That is separate from using a Proton address as a recipient. See the official Bridge explanation.

Simple Memo sends through its sending API and an external delivery provider; setup does not connect directly to a Proton API. A free Proton account can serve as the destination if the address is active, ordinary mail can be received, and storage is available. Check Proton capacity separately from Simple Memo’s free and paid sending limits.

For ordinary incoming external email without PGP, Proton documents TLS in transit and zero-access encryption after receipt. Choosing a Proton Mail recipient does not make the whole Simple Memo delivery route end-to-end encrypted (E2EE). See what Proton encrypts.

Simple Memo’s Relay API and Resend process content for delivery. Protection after receipt in Proton Mail does not remove the earlier delivery processing or copies held by the sender. See Simple Memo’s technical privacy explanation.

Subjects and sender or recipient addresses are among the fields not covered by content E2EE. Review content, addressing information, local history, and export destinations separately to understand where copies exist.

For backup or migration, the Proton Mail Export Tool is available to all users. It runs on Windows, macOS, or Linux and exports the entire mailbox, including email unrelated to notes, as EML messages and JSON metadata. The email is decrypted; an exported file does not retain the inbox’s encryption automatically.

1. Choose storage you control and check whether the location is shared or synced to an unintended cloud service.
2. After following the official export steps, verify that needed messages and attachments are present and that you can open an EML and read it.
3. Check the destination’s import format, encryption, and access permissions. Verify the copies before deleting source messages.

Exporting is optional and is not required to send notes from Simple Memo. It is also separate from automatic storage in Proton Drive or conversion into Obsidian notes.
