iPhoneとMacだけなら、追加の契約も別アプリも要りません。要るのは保管庫を正しい場所に置くことと、ファイルを端末に置いたままにしておくことの2つだけです。公式ドキュメントの原文にあたって手順を並べます（方式の比較は再掲しません）。On an iPhone and a Mac, iCloud needs no extra subscription and no extra app. Two things matter: putting the vault in the right place and keeping its files on the device. SHORT ANSWER

Turn on iCloud Drive, then create the vault inside the "Obsidian" folder in iCloud Drive. On iPhone that means toggling "Store in iCloud" while creating the vault; on Mac it means picking the Obsidian folder inside iCloud Drive in the file picker.

On the second device, choose "Open folder as vault" and point it at the same folder. What Obsidian's documentation warns about is the location: create it outside iCloud Drive/Obsidian/[Your Vault Name] and you will hit syncing issues.

手順1: iCloud DriveをオンにするStep 1: Turn on iCloud Drive

ほとんどの端末では既にオンですが、確認しておきます。オフのままだとフォルダは作れても同期は始まりません。It's usually already on, but check. With it off you can still create the folder — it just never syncs.

  1. iPhone / iPadiPhone / iPad
    「設定」→「[自分の名前]」→「iCloud」→「iCloud Drive」をオンにします。Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → iCloud Drive.
  2. MacMac
    「システム設定」→「Apple ID」→「iCloud」→「iCloud Drive」をオンにします。System Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → iCloud Drive.

手順2: iCloudの中に保管庫を作るStep 2: Create the vault inside iCloud

最初の1台で作ります。iPhoneとMacのどちらから作っても構いませんが、作り方が違います。iPhoneはトグル1つ、Macはフォルダを自分で選びます。Do this once, on your first device. Either platform works, but the flow differs: iPhone gives you a toggle, Mac makes you pick the folder yourself.

iPhone / iPad で作る場合Creating it on iPhone / iPad

  1. Obsidianを開き、「保管庫を新規作成」をタップします。Open Obsidian and tap Create new vault.
  2. 保管庫の名前を入力します。Enter a name for the vault.
  3. 「iCloudに保存」をオンに切り替えます。ここが本体です。オフのまま作ると、その保管庫は端末の中だけに残ります。Toggle on "Store in iCloud". This is the whole trick. Leave it off and the vault stays on that one device.
  4. 「作成」をタップします。Tap Create.

Mac で作る場合Creating it on Mac

  1. Obsidianを開き、「保管庫を新規作成」を選びます。Open Obsidian and choose Create new vault.
  2. ファイルピッカーで iCloud Drive → Obsidian に移動します。In the file picker, navigate to iCloud Drive → Obsidian.
  3. 保管庫用のフォルダを作り、名前を付けます。Create a folder for the vault and name it.
  4. 「作成」を選んで完了です。Select Create to finish.
なぜ「Obsidian」フォルダの中なのかWHY INSIDE THE "OBSIDIAN" FOLDER

iCloud Driveの中には、アプリが自分用に持つ領域があります。Obsidianのアプリアイコンが付いた「Obsidian」フォルダがそれで、iOS版のObsidianが読み書きするのはこの中です。同じ名前で自分で作ったプレーンなフォルダは別物で、公式ドキュメントは「アプリアイコンのないプレーンなフォルダは使用しないでください」と名指しで警告しています。iCloud Drive gives apps their own area. The "Obsidian" folder carrying the app's icon is that area, and it is where Obsidian on iOS reads and writes. A plain folder you created yourself with the same name is a different thing — Obsidian's documentation says in so many words: do not use the plain folder without the app icon.

手順3: 2台目で同じ保管庫を開くStep 3: Open the same vault on your second device

2台目では新規作成しません。既にあるフォルダを開きにいきます。ここで新規作成してしまうと、同じ名前の保管庫が2つ並ぶことになります。On the second device you do not create a vault — you open the existing folder. Creating one here leaves you with two vaults of the same name sitting side by side.

  1. 2台目のMacまたはiPhoneでObsidianを開きます。Open Obsidian on the other Mac or iPhone.
  2. 保管庫スイッチャーを開き、「保管庫としてフォルダを開く」を選びます。Open the vault switcher and choose Open folder as vault.
  3. iCloud Drive → Obsidian に移動し、1台目で作った保管庫フォルダを選びます。Navigate to iCloud Drive → Obsidian and select the vault folder you created on the first device.

つまずくのはだいたいこの3つThree traps, and that's mostly the list

「iCloudで同期できない」の相談は、手順そのものより置き場所・退避・重ねがけのどれかに当たっていることが多いです。3つとも公式ドキュメントが名指しで警告しています。"iCloud sync isn't working" usually isn't about the steps. It's one of three things — location, offloading, or layering — and Obsidian's own documentation calls out all three by name.

正しい場所は iCloud Drive/Obsidian/[保管庫名] です。iCloud Drive直下や「書類」の中に作った保管庫は、iOS版のObsidianから見えないか、同期の問題を起こします。確かめ方は次のとおりです。The correct location is iCloud Drive/Obsidian/[Your Vault Name]. A vault created directly in iCloud Drive, or inside Documents, either isn't visible to Obsidian on iOS or causes syncing problems. Here's how to check.

  1. iPhoneで「ファイル」App を開きます。Open the Files app on iPhone.
  2. 「ブラウズ」をタップし、「場所」の下の iCloud Drive を選びます。Tap Browse, then select iCloud Drive under Locations.
  3. 保管庫が Obsidian フォルダの中にあることを確認します。別の場所にあるなら、Obsidianフォルダの中へ移動します。Confirm the vault is inside the Obsidian folder. If it's somewhere else, move it in.

iCloudがファイルを端末から退避しているiCloud has offloaded the files

iCloudには、使っていないファイルの実体を端末から追い出してクラウドだけに残す仕組みがあります。Obsidianは保管庫の中身に直接アクセスするので、実体が無いとファイルが見つからない扱いになります。公式ドキュメントのFAQは、この退避が同期の問題の原因になると明記しています。対処はmacOSのバージョンで違います。iCloud can push the contents of unused files off the device and keep them only in the cloud. Obsidian reads the vault's files directly, so when the contents aren't there, the files read as missing. The official FAQ states plainly that this offloading causes sync issues. The fix depends on your macOS version.

公式ドキュメントはこれを「任意だが、読み込みを速く保つために強く推奨」と位置づけています。macOS 14以前の設定はObsidian以外にも効いてしまうので、そこは承知のうえで切る必要があります。Obsidian's documentation calls this optional but strongly recommended for keeping load times fast. Note that on macOS 14 and earlier the switch reaches beyond Obsidian — it affects everything iCloud stores on that Mac.

同期方式を重ねがけしているTwo sync methods layered on one vault

公式ドキュメントは「同期サービスの混在を避ける」という項目を立て、同じ保管庫を複数のサービス（例としてObsidian SyncとiCloudの同時利用）で同期しないよう案内しています。理由はデータの競合や破損を防ぐためです。無料のiCloudで足りているところに公式Syncを試したくなったら、どちらか一方に寄せてから切り替えてください。Obsidian's documentation has a dedicated note — avoid mixing sync services — telling you not to sync one vault through several services at once, giving Obsidian Sync plus iCloud as the example. The reason is data conflicts and corruption. If you're on iCloud and want to try the official Sync, move to one or the other rather than running both.

同じ理由で、WindowsのiCloud Driveは避けます。公式ドキュメントはiCloudの推奨システムを macOS・iOS・iPadOS とし、Windows上のiCloud Driveではファイルの重複や破損が発生する可能性があると明記しています。WindowsやAndroidも使うなら、iCloud以外の方式を選ぶことになります。For the same reason, skip iCloud Drive on Windows. The documentation lists iCloud's recommended systems as macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, and states that iCloud Drive on Windows may lead to file duplication or corruption. If Windows or Android is in your mix, iCloud isn't the method to pick.

iCloudが運ぶのは「フォルダまるごと」iCloud carries the whole folder, settings included

保管庫はただのフォルダで、中には書いたMarkdownファイルのほかに、設定を収めた .obsidian フォルダが入っています。iCloud Driveはフォルダ単位で同期するので、ノートだけでなく設定も一緒に運ばれます。多くの人にとってはこれが便利な既定です（テーマもホットキーも2台で揃う）。A vault is just a folder, and alongside your Markdown files it holds a .obsidian folder with your settings. iCloud Drive syncs at the folder level, so your settings ride along with your notes. For most people that's the convenient default — same theme, same hotkeys, both devices.

(The Syncthing section says to exclude .obsidian from syncing when you want separate settings — which is also confirmation that settings live inside the vault.) iCloud has no exclude list, so on iCloud that feature is the way to do it.

バイト数の差は日本語がUTF-8で1文字3バイトになるためで、内容の差ではありません。なお公式リポジトリは英語版を正と定め、全ページを各言語に1対1で用意する方針を明記しています。翻訳の遅れが起きうるのはその方針の運用上の話なので、疑わしいときは英語版を見るのが確実です。The byte difference is UTF-8 (Japanese characters take three bytes), not a difference in content. Based on official documentation (not verified on device): the iPhone/Mac settings paths, the behavior of Keep Downloaded and Optimize Mac Storage, and the Windows caveat — all documented by Obsidian, none of it confirmed on screen here. First-party (our own implementation): how Simple Memo writes (appending via NSFileCoordinator, the target filenames, AES-GCM encryption of the on-device queue) is taken from the app's implementation. Not testable in this environment: actual iCloud Drive sync and conflict behavior (no macOS/iOS). Conflict behavior is covered in our sync methods overview, where iCloud is likewise untested on device. Documentation changes over time — check the official site for the current version.
